Friday Roundup: Pour One Out for The Purple One
Keep Yourself Warm: You’re cordially invited to dance and hand out beer and/or whiskey-induced hugs at Frightened Rabbit tonight with yours truly. 8:30pm @ The Knit. BYOSA (Bring Your Own Scottish Accent). Don’t be a dobber and miss it.
How to get those sexy wristband tan lines in five short days: Still feel like I’m catching up on sleep (and trying to drop 10 pounds) after another banner Treefort. Highlights this year include Magic Sword absolutely destroying main stage at dusk, Holiday Friends at new-favorite-venue-that’s-equal-parts-prom-and-skating-rink Mardi Gras, and Ural Thomas bringing the pain at Hannah’s. Points deducted for the missing crockpot of gravy at El Korah’s Breakfastfort. Shame!
Manufactured discontent before bedtime: Much obliged to The Modern for including an excerpt from my long-ish short story “Halloween in Hanalei,” in their upcoming Book of Modern which, I’m told, will share bedside table space with the best-selling book of all time.
Let’s play swingset: Double much obliged to The Cabin and Boise Art Museum for inviting me to contribute a short story to their “Tall Tales” author and artist pairing, an exhibition you can catch over the next year at BAM.
I have seen the Alamo and it is small: Also, this will always feel more relevant to me, personally, than this.
A few half-memories in memory of The Purple One: dancing to “Sexy MF” during warm-ups for play practice (obviously); driving with the window down and listening to the Batman soundtrack on cassette which, along with a single side of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Live 1975-85, and Graceland, was one of my first tapes in my first car; and showing my dad that epic guitar-gods-get-schooled video from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction a few years back. Rest in Purple, you sexy motherf*cker.
